BEIJING, Oct. 5 (Xinhua) -- Rafael Nadal of Spain returned to world No. 1 for the first time since 3rd July, 2011 after his opponent Tomas Berdych of the Czech Republic retired from their semifinal clash at the China Open here on Saturday.


The current world No.1 Novak Djokovic of Serbia will take on Frenchman Richard Gasquet in the other semifinal and no matter the Serb reaches the final or not, he will lose the No. 1 spot to Nadal.


The 27-year-old Spaniard has had two stints at the summit of men's professional tennis for a total of 102 weeks. Nadal first became No. 1 on 18 August 2008 for a period of 46 weeks. He regained top spot from Roger Federer on 7 June 2010 and added 56 weeks to his tally until relinquishing No. 1 to Djokovic on 4 July 2011.


Nadal, who was sidelined with a left knee injury from June 2012 until February 2013, credited his positive attitude for his success this season, which has seen him reach 13 championship matches in 14 tournaments.

Nadal had two breaks while Berdych had one in the first six games and the Czech seemed to twist his back hitting the ball while trailing at 2-4. And after five minutes' medical time, the Czech opted to quit the match.


Nadal extended his Head2Head over Berdych to 16-3. He has now won his last 15 clashes against Czech.

It opened its fifth overseas bookstore in late November in Sri Lanka. "We have a medium-term plan that by 2015 we will have 10 bookstores in Southeast and South Asia.
