Paddinton Bear makes an appearance at the 64th Berlin International Film Festival in Berlin in February.

Due for release later this year, the live-action feature film based on the marmalade-loving bear from darkest Peru, has been a long time coming.


Created by author Michael Bond in the 1950s, some 30 million books following the bear's various adventures have been sold worldwide. Turned into a popular television series, Paddington, with his distinctive Wellington boots Kendall Graveman Athletics Jersey , old hat and duffle coat, was portrayed by a stop-motion puppet. A 1976 movie was made with conventional animation.


The new film, though, bristles with the latest technology, including a computer-generated Paddington who, for the cast that also includes Sally Hawkins (Blue Jasmine), Hugh Bonneville (Downton Abbey) and Julie Walters (Harry Potter) Jose Canseco Athletics Jersey , was represented during filming by a stick.


"We had the good fortune of spending a few weeks in rehearsal together ... so we were able to get used to the 'spirit of the bear,'" Bonneville said at a press screening of excerpts from the movie, which will be released in Britain on November 28 and in the US on Christmas Day.


With the starry cast, and with French producer StudioCanal backing the film directed by the young British director Paul King (The Mighty Boosh), there are high hopes this could be the start of another worldwide conquest for the bear that has been a favorite of British children for decades, but might not be as well known in the US as Winnie-the-Pooh.

"I loved the idea that he's an outsider needing to be brought in," she said of Paddington's forlorn appearance at Paddington Station in London.

Daniel Bell is surprised by the international interest in his new book.


A tract on political philosophy that runs to just 198 pages (plus 106 pages of footnotes) might normally trigger only modest academic curiosity.


But The China Model: Political Meritocracy and the Limits of Democracy (Princeton University Press) is set to become the most significant book about China in English this year.


It has already had full reviews in the Financial Times, The Economist and the Wall Street Journal, among others, and was selected by the philosopher and writer Julian Baggini as a summer book to take to the beach. In a piece for The Guardian, he cited it as an "uncomfortable challenge" to his liberal beliefs.


"I feel sorry for him, if that is his holiday reading," says Bell of Baggini Dennis Eckersley Athletics Jersey , laughing, while sitting in his apartment on Tsinghua University's campus in Beijing, where he has been a professor of ethics and political philosophy for a decade.


His new book is seen as comparing Western liberal democracy unfavorably with the Chinese meritocratic system of government. He insists, however, that this was not what he had attempted to do.


"I am not in favor of the US system of government being replaced by the Chinese system or the other way round. That is crazy," he tells China Daily.


"I have had a lot of people, as you can imagine Dave Henderson Athletics Jersey , who disagree with it. Some of them have used up column space to talk about their own ideas and not engage with the book at all. But I have had some positive reaction also."


The 51-year-old academic says he wants to challenge the theory that Western liberal democracy is a universal ideal.


"I think in Western countries, academics and the popular media generally think that government is just about one person, one vote, regardless of whether a country is very small or has 1 billion people. The actual concept of democracy is also more complex than that, too."

Bell believes many underestimate the depth of experience of China's leadership.


Of some 7 million Communist Party of China cadres who begin at primary-level organizations, only 140,000 make it to central and provincial governments. To be among seven members elected to the Standing Committee of the Politburo of the CPC Central Committee Catfish Hunter Athletics Jersey , the Party's topmost decision-making body, someone would have to have previously served either as governor or Party secretary of at least two provinces.


Someone of Barack Obama's pre-presidential experience would have only made it as manager of a small county in the Chinese system, Bell quotes an expert as saying.


"People do not understand the meritocratic aspects of the Chinese system. There are three standards of what counts as being a good political leader, which I discuss in the book."


Intellectual quality, social skills and virtue (commitment to the community)－in that order, are the three key requirements of China's leaders, Bell argues in his book.
