Speaking at an interactive session dubbed "Papers on Solid Waste Management and Liquid Waste Management" on the sidelines of the 2nd edition of Africa Engineering Conference, panelists pointed out that the inability of African countries to make efficient use of their waste through re-use poses a serious challenge to waste disposal on the continent.


Rwanda hosts the conference from Sept. 25 to 29 under the theme "Effective Waste Management in Africa http://www.cheapbook.org/images/pic/Jordan2015/Jordan-11/authentic-air-jordan-11-retro-378037-006-black-gamma-blue-black-varsity-maize-womens-shoes.jpg ," which focuses more on promoting professional engineering in Africa to drive infrastructure growth.


"African countries need to adopt a set of appropriate technologies that will assist them to convert waste into re-usable assets. Total system planning, which involves developing the most suitable mix of infrastructure and services to manage the solid waste," said Aime Muzola, CEO of Rwanda's Water and Sanitation Corporation Authority.


He added that the refusal of common waste management practices in Africa by environmentalists has made the disposal of various waste streams in the cities a lot more difficult.


At the meeting, participants pointed out that poorly built storm-water drains in most African cities are frequently clogged by solid waste http://www.cheapbook.org/images/pic/Jordan2015/Jordan-11/authentic-378037-117-air-jordan-11-retro-white-black-legend-blue-mens-shoes.jpg , leading to flooding and water contamination, posing a health risk to urban dwellers.


According to the World Bank, the worlds' cities in 2012 generated 1.3 billion tons of solid waste, amounting to 1.2 kilograms per person per day.


With rapid population growth and urbanization around the world, municipal waste generation is expected to rise to 2.2 billion tons by 2025.


The five-day conference was organized by Rwanda's ministry of infrastructure in collaboration with the Institute of Engineering Rwanda and Federation of Africa Engineering Organizations. CHICAGO, June 22 (Xinhua) -- Gold futures on the COMEX division of the New York Mercantile Exchange went up on Thursday as U.S. dollar index kept fluctuating during the session.


The most active gold contract for August delivery rose 3.6 U.S. dollars http://www.cheapbook.org/images/pic/Jordan2015/Jordan-11/378037-041-air-jordan-retro-11-xi-space-jam-black-varsity-royal-white-a11006.jpg , or 0.29 percent, to settle at 1,249.40 dollars per ounce.


Although the U.S. Dollar Index rebounded and posted an increase of 0.06 percent to 97.62 as of 1737 GMT, it had remained in the negative territory for most time in the morning.


The index is a measure of the dollar against a basket of other major currencies. When the dollar goes down, gold futures will rise.

SYDNEY， March 8 (Xinhua) -- During the 1990s a United States company Erox， patented two specific compounds that reported to be sex-specific human pheromones， however researchers in Australia have announced Wednesday that it may not be the case.


"Our study is suggesting that these two particular steroid compounds are not pheromones，" The University of Western Australia's Centre for Evolutionary Biology， Professor Leigh Simmons told Xinhua.


To conduct the study， researchers followed up on an experiment that came out of China's Academy of Sciences， where they asked subjects to assign gender to ambiguous videos of people walking， while being administered by the Erox compound.


"So we replicated this kind of experiment using morphed images of faces that appeared gender neutral， we then administered our subjects with the Erox compound and asked them what sex the faces were，" Simmons said.


So if the compound acted like pheromones， the male subjects of the study should see the face as female and for the female subjects， the faces should appear male.


"Our study found that the subjects could not identify gender above chance，" he said.


In a second experiment the researchers collected a series of male and female faces and asked subjects to rate their attractiveness before and after being exposed to pheromones.
